It’s winter in Wisconsin. The snow (again!) is pretty, but it sure is cold out! It seems that when the weather gets cold, it becomes harder for people to eat healthy, meet weight loss goals, avoid eating when not hungry, etc. I sometimes find myself grabbing food just because I’m cold . . . and tired of being cold. I hear more of my clients talking about boredom eating, being stuck inside more. I also believe that many people feel a dip in mood during the winter months. Whatever the reason, I see more people struggling with their eating habits. Is that true for you?
It doesn’t mean that we have to eat poorly all winter and then worry about cleaning up our act in the spring. That can be a lot of work! I think it is a good time to practice the strategies we need all year long – we just need them more during our Wisconsin winters. Whatever we can do to add some healthy interest and excitement to our lives will help to keep the need for excitement from our food in check. And if all else fails, there’s nothing that works quite as well as a reprieve from the weather if you can manage to get away to a warmer climate for a while!
