Have you heard of the hCG diet? I have met with a couple of people who have tried it, and they have lost weight, but it does not seem like a good idea to me. I am also betting that their weight loss will not be maintained unless there is a transition to a more realistic approach.
A recent article talks about the plan, which includes shots of a hormone produced in pregnant women. There are all kinds of sprays and drops now available as well. The claim is that the hormone reduces appetite, yet studies do not show that it works any better than a placebo.
How does weight loss occur? Well, the 500 calories/day plan would cause some significant weight loss for anyone, don’t you think?! Oh, by the way, you can also get hair loss, fatigue, blood clots, and headaches with it.
When will we stop looking for the next quick fix? This is not a good way to lose weight, and it certainly does not teach the skills needed for maintenance. It seems to me to be just one more plan that appeals when panic sets in and weight loss seems to be urgent.
Take a deep breath, and calm down. Losing and maintaining are much more predictable with a steady, balanced attitude that includes well-considered lifestyle changes. Too much focus on the desired outcome (a number on the scale) and not enough attention to lifestyle, creates nothing but anxiety. Pain and suffering, not to mention hair loss, will just not work in the long run.
